Held over the weekend of 25 – 26 January 2025 on the magnificent Berg River, snaking through Port Owen, Velddrif, and Laaiplek, the ever-popular Port Owen River Race promises to be a spectacular event for competitors and spectators alike!

Sailors can look forward to a weekend of racing, braaing, camping, and camaraderie as POYC once again glamps out on hospitality, offering sailors some great river racing, as well as: (yes its’s a long list so we had to list them in bullet points…)
- club dinner on Friday evening with the rest of the POYC members at R120 per person (beef stroganoff with rice/pasta, garlic bread and salad plus a lekker dessert of custard cream puffs will be served) – please book with your entry;
- breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning at R50 per person – payment can be made on the day;
- Snoek braai on Saturday evening at R100 per person which includes sweet potato, coleslaw, bread, butter, jam, and ice-cream wafers for dessert – please book with your entry;
- hot dogs at R25 each available at the launch site on Saturday and at the POYC grounds on Sunday after the race – payment to the lovely hot dog stand ladies directly.
For accommodation, POYC offers sailors free camping facilities on the yacht club premises (or perhaps if you feel like sailing your slightly larger vessel to Port Owen, arrange mooring space with POMA and make it a two in one occasion!). For alternative accommodation, a vast array of hotels, bed & breakfast, self-catering, or Airbnb facilities are available in the area. Have a look at Velddrif Tourism’s website for accredited accommodation.
Great sailing is (also) on the menu with two races up and down the Berg River on Saturday and a third race out the Laaiplek harbour mouth and into the St Helena Bay on Sunday. As always, racing is, of course, weather permitting.
Overall winners will be announced based on an all-comers handicap basis and where five or more boats have entered a specific class, class prizes will also be up for grabs.
But wait, there’s more: a Grand Prize available to the interclub team winners! Alas, we have to insist on at least three boats per club to make this a worthy competition. So bring your club mates along and win your club some racing bragging rights!
But most of all, just bring your fun-loving spirit, sailing expertise, and a sunhat!
We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful Port Owen and Ramsar Convention protected Berg River Estuary, where Flamigos, Pelicans, and Sandpipers keep you company while you race!
