RC sailboat racing has become one of the most enjoyable and accessible activities at the Port Owen Yacht Club. On racing weekends the Port Owen East Basin hosts lively racing sessions where skippers guide their miniature yachts across the water with precision and plenty of friendly competition.
It’s an ideal way for non‑sailors to discover the excitement of sailing. RC boats let newcomers learn wind awareness, tactics, and boat handling from the shore, making the sport approachable for all ages and skill levels. Racing also continues outside the traditional sailing season, keeping the club active year‑round.
Affordability is another major draw. RC sailing requires minimal equipment and low maintenance, making it one of the most cost‑effective ways to get involved in the sailing community.
The current fleet is mostly made up of International One Metre (IOM) class boats, known for their performance and consistency, some South African designed and built Start 73’s and Looking ahead, the club is developing a new class of small “footy” boats—compact, playful, and even more affordable—perfect for encouraging new participants to join in. How ever if its got a sail and it swims its also welcome.
